Skepticism Pays
By nature, we are a skeptical group, in part because we review as many as 200-300 businesses each year for our investment clients – both public and private – and in part because we're on the ground in China and have seen the good and the bad. We know that biotech is a risky and volatile industry to start with, and even more so in China, unless you know the pitfalls to avoid. But the rewards can, of course, be huge, especially for the private equity investor.
The trick is in knowing which company is capable of creating successful drug candidates that will survive preclinical testing and the incredible rigors of clinical trials to become the next big drug. Less than 1% make it through this process, and most of those become also-rans, not blockbusters. It's also vital to know when to invest – when a company will achieve the greatest increase in value.
