Can-Fite Biopharma Shifts Drug Manufacturing to China Jan 21, 2013: Can-Fite Biopharma, an Israeli firm developing drugs for inflammatory and liver disease, will transfer its drug production to China. The company said China’s Chemspec has optimized production of its APIs, reducing its costs considerably. Can-Fite is facing multiple Phase III clinical trials for its drug candidates, and it estimates that outsourcing the manufacturing to Chemspec will save the company millions of dollars. HitGen and Viva Biotech Team Up to Provide Early-Stage CRO Services Dec 24, 2012: HitGen Ltd. and Viva Biotech Ltd., two China CROs specializing in early-stage services, announced a new collaboration. HitGen, located in Chengdu, offers lead generation services. VivaBiotech of Shanghai is a structure-based drug discovery CRO. According to the two companies, their now-integrated early hit-to lead generation program addresses a previously unmet need in China’s pre-clinical drug discovery sector. More details....

ShangPharma Accepts $9/ADS Go-Private Offer Dec 21, 2012: ShangPharma, a pre-clinical CRO headquartered in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, has agreed to a go-private offer of $9.00 per ADS. The offer was made by a group comprised of Michael Xin Hui, the company’s Chairman/CEO/Founder, and TPG, a US private equity group that has long been an investor in ShangPharma. Mr. Hui currently controls 54% of the company’s shares, while TPG still owns 11%. TPG will presumably fund at least some of the purchase of the remaining 35% of outstanding shares. The deal values ShangPharma at $173 million. More details....

Innovent Constructing Biologic Facility in Suzhou Nov 1, 2012: Innovent Biologics, a Suzhou company formed last year, is building a biotech plant in BioBay. The company has two aims: it intends to in-license biotech drugs for the China market, and it also wants to provide contract manufacturing services to other companies. The company is led by an international management team of experienced biotech executives. With $30 million in startup capital from Fidelity, Lilly Ventures and Suzhou BioBay, Innovent has instant credibility. More details....

SLG-Giant Pharm, a China CRO, to Run China Arm of US NIH Trial Oct 31, 2012: SLG-Giant Pharm Service Group, a China physician-owned clinical-stage CRO, was granted a full-service contract to conduct the China arm of the ATACH-II trial by the US National Institute of Health. According to SLG-Giant, this is the first NIH supported clinical trial with sites outside the US. Around the globe, ATACH-II will enroll 1200 patients. More details....

Pharmaron, a Beijing CRO, Announces Partnership with AstraZeneca Oct 14, 2012: Pharmaron, China’s third-largest CRO, announced a multi-year drug discovery partnership with AstraZeneca that will support AstraZeneca’s global Innovative Medicines Units. Pharmaron will have a dedicated staff of several hundred scientists working on AstraZeneca projects at the CRO’s new facilities in Beijing. The agreement calls for Pharmaron to provide AstraZeneca with discovery services and efficacy screening. More details....

New Beijing Facility for MicroConstants China Given GLP Cert Aug 29, 2012: MicroConstants China, a CRO that offers PK analysis and early-stage clinical trial management services in China, said its new facility in Beijing was granted an Endorsement of GLP Compliance from the OECD, an international organization of developed and emerging countries. MicroConstants opened its original China facility in 2007. It moved to a new 8,000 square lab in February. The parent company, MicroConstants, is a San Diego CRO that provides bioanalytical and DMPK services. More details....

WuXi PharmaTech Signs CMO Deal with TaiMed Biologics Aug 28, 2012: WuXi PharmaTech signed a contract manufacturing agreement with TaiMed Biologics of Taiwan to manufacture a mAb that was developed to treat HIV. WuXi will make ibalizumab (TMB-355) for the drug’s Phase II and Phase III global clinical trials. Ibalizumab is a viral-entry inhibitor that does not suppress the immune system. WuXi will complete the work at its biologics manufacturing facilities in China and its biologics testing facilities in the US. More details...

Tigermed and MSD China Sign LOI for Clinical Trial Services Aug 23, 2012: Hangzhou Tigermed Consulting, a China CRO, signed a letter of intent with MSD China that calls for Tigermed to provide MSD with clinical trial services for a three-year period, from August 15, 2012 to July 31, 2015. Neither the range of services, the type of drug(s) involved, nor the financial details of the relationship were disclosed, probably awaiting a closing agreement. MSD is the name for Merck outside of the US and Canada. More details....
