ChinaBio® Schedules First Partnering Forum for June 2009 in Shanghai

ChinaBio® Accelerator announced it is organizing the first partnering forum focused on China life science technology to be held in China. The ChinaBio® Partnering Forum, scheduled for June 3 and 4, 2009 in Shanghai, will bring together more than 300 companies, researchers, and scientists looking to form partnerships around novel life science technologies developed in China.

Universities, institutes and companies from throughout China, representing 50-100 novel technologies, will have the opportunity to meet with nearly all the major pharma companies, many of China’s own pharma, biotech and medical device companies, 50+ VCs, and many others interested in licensing or commercializing novel technologies.

The two-day forum will feature one-on-one partnering meetings, technology presentations by China-based researchers and biotech companies, big pharma leaders discussing their “wish lists,” executive workshops and exhibits.

Technology areas represented will include: novel targets, leads and molecules, biomarkers, diagnostics, drug development platforms, drug delivery systems and medical devices. All technologies will be pre-screened by ChinaBio® to ensure the highest quality presentations and partnering opportunities.

The Partnering Forum comes at an opportune moment, because the global financial crisis has slowed VC investment in biotech and life science companies in China. However, big pharma and biotech have shown an increased appetite for novel, early stage technologies, a bright spot in the financing landscape.

"We decided to launch our first Partnering Forum based on feedback from many of the big pharma," Scott explained.  "Merck, Pfizer, Roche and GSK have all supported our Investor Forums in the past, and now they and other big pharma are telling us that they are actively seeking deals for earlier stage technology.  This gives entrepreneurs and scientists a new way of funding their development in addition to VC funding."

According to research from ChinaBio, China life science companies, universities and institutes have completed more partnering deals in the first 10 months of 2008 than all of 2007 and the number of M&A deals has doubled. "The value of these deals can be significant – from $1 million to over $1 billion USD," Scott said.

To date, ChinaBio®-produced events have helped early and mid-stage biotech companies in China to access over $60 million US from VCs and leading pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, Roche, Lilly and Merck.

"China is the fastest growing market for pharmaceuticals in the world and now is transforming itself into an internationally-recognized leader in biotech innovation," said Greg Scott, President and founder of ChinaBio®. "China biotech is clearly poised for global success because of its significant number of highly skilled scientists and innovators coupled with strong government support and a unique low cost, high quality development structure. We are now very pleased to announce our first Partnering Forum to be held in China and look forward to expanding on the success of our prior events here."
