WuXi PharmaTech Reports Excellent Q2; Raises 2013 Guidance

WuXi PharmaTech’s Q2 results showed the company is continuing its long-standing pattern of steady growth. Revenues were up 9.2% to $142 million and net income climbed 44% to $29.6 million. The company’s non-GAAP earnings were $.46 per share, which was seven cents ahead of consensus estimates. With half of 2013 now known, WuXi raised guidance for full-year 2013. More details....

Tianyin Pharma Hopes to Sell Azithromycin API in India

Tianyin Pharma is looking for deals to market its Azithromycin API in the Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan), though it was not specific about how it would accomplish this. When Tianyin started construction of the facility, the China market for antibiotics was larger than it is now. China’s crackdown on antibiotic use lowered domestic prospects for sales just at Tianyin was spending to increase production. In its Q3 (ended March 30, 2013), Tianyin announced antibiotics produced $1.1 million in revenue. More details....

Fosun Named One of China’s Top Ten Innovative Pharmas

Shanghai Fosun Pharma was one of ten pharmas listed as “China’s Most Innovative Pharmaceutical Enterprises.” In announcing the award, Fosun emphasized its internal research, mentioning that its malaria treatment was recently accepted by WHO and that a clinical trial of its transdermal patch for Parkinson’s Disease was approved by the CFDA. Both of these are worthy accomplishments, especially for an award that stresses innovation, but much of Fosun’s growth over the years has been a result of the company’s relentless R&D activity. J&J Touts its Pharma R&D Efforts for China

Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, a division of Johnson & Johnson, did something this week that big pharmas haven't done very often in the last few years: it bragged about its recent drug discovery success and made predictions about its future progress. The company said it had four new medical entities awaiting approval in China along with four line extensions. It expects to file an additional nine NMEs and six line extensions for approval by 2017. GSK Says Lowering Prices in China Caused Higher Sales

Want to increase revenues in China? You might try lowering prices. It seems to have worked for GlaxoSmithKline.  In 2009, the company reduced the cost of its allergy treatment, Avamys nasal spray. The number of units sold jumped to five times their previous figures, though revenues clearly gained less than that. Overall, GSK’s China revenues were up 20% in 2012, reaching $1.5 billion.
