China View: JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, 2013

The annual pilgrimage to San Francisco to attend what is affectionately known as just “JPMorgan” is now over.  After four or five grueling days of back-to-back 30-minute meetings, I can report that interest in China is very high. Most companies included a China Strategy in their presentations, as investors are demanding to know how their portfolio companies are going to address the world’s third largest, soon to be second largest, global market. For any China life science company wishing to export to the West, or US/European company that is looking to leverage China’s 22% market growth, JPMorgan is a must-attend event. More details....

China at JP Morgan Conference - A Few Observations

For the first time in 29 years, the industry's most important annual investment conference, the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, added a track to focus on a single country - China.  Fourteen China life science companies presented their results and plans to a standing-room-only crowd.  The China reception that evening was filled with the who's-who of China's life science industry, from CEOs to VCs to global pharma execs.  China is rapidly coming of age. Charles River’s Decision Shows Misunderstanding of Pharma’s Future

This week's announcement that some of Charles River Laboratories’ investors blocked the deal to acquire WuXi AppTec is remarkable in several aspects. Most importantly, Charles River is passing up a one-time opportunity to establish near-complete global dominance in its industry. The deal significantly undervalued WuXi because it ignored the strategic value of WuXi itself, which is the dominant player in the world's most important emerging market. More details...

China’s Opportunity to Create Mega-Clusters

There is a huge difference between China and the US when it comes to building “life science clusters.” The US has no strategic plan about how to create a cluster, and so the clusters grow up organically over many, many years. China, on the other hand, “declares” that an area will become a cluster, and then makes it so. China offers incentives to bring companies together, but it lacks private funding, the money that is necessary to take companies to the next stage. More details...

In My Opinion: China vs. the Economy - Is it China's Time?

We have just concluded our 4th ChinaBio® Investor Forum - our first in Beijing - and I'm on my way back to the US thinking about the event (it was a great success) and what the speakers said about the economic turmoil and how it may - or may not - affect China. At our event, the energy level seemed quite high and the general mood was very upbeat. But we can't ignore that the economy is slowing in China. So, peering out from our insular view from China's life science and healthcare industry, it would seem that things are pretty rosy, especially considering the turmoil elsewhere.  But is it?  More details...
