WuXi AppTec Merges Formulation/Finishing Services into API Manufacturing Division

WuXi AppTech will merge its Pharmaceutical Development Services division into STA Pharma, a WuXi listed subsidiary that provides small molecule CRO/CMO services. The transfer adds formulation/finished drug services into STA's API and intermediate manufacturing offerings. PDS offers pre-formulation and formulation development, along with clinical trial material manufacturing and packaging services. WuXi said the merger will offer clients a complete set of manufacturing services for small molecule drugs, speeding up the development process. More details....

ShangPharma Forms Drug Translation Collaboration with UCSF

ShangPharma Innovation, Inc. (SPII) will collaborate with the University of California San Francisco by providing UCSF scientists with funding and other support to accelerate the development of promising life science discoveries. ShangPharma plans to bring industrial development to UCSF's academic projects. SPII agreed to provide "several years of funding" to underwrite R&D in UCSF labs. It will also pay for CRO services at ChemPartner for joint SPII-UCSF projects. SPII and UCSF will own the projects jointly, though no further financial details were provided. More details....

WuXi Biologics Rises 37% in First Hong Kong Trading Session

In its first day of trading on the Hong Kong Exchange, WuXi Biologics rose 37%, showing that the newly listed company continues to attract heavy investor following its IPO. The open market trading increased the company's market capitalization to $4.1 billion. Last week, WuXi Biologics raised $511 million in an IPO that was heavily oversubscribed. The company comprises the biologic CRO/CMO operations of well-known WuXi AppTec, which continues to be privately held. Headquartered in Wuxi city, Wuxi Biologics has facilities in Wuxi, Shanghai and Suzhou. More details....

WuXi Biologics Prices Hong Kong IPO at $511 Million

WuXi Biologics priced its Hong Kong IPO at the top of the range, raising $511 million, according to numerous sources. Demand for the offering was strong, caused by the WuXi pedigree and the fast growing revenues of the biologics business-- up 91% in the first nine months of 2016. The WuXi Biologics offering was 30 times oversubscribed, potential cornerstone investors were turned away, and underwriters closed their books early. The offering values WuXi Biologics at $3 billion, and the new shares are expected to begin trading in Hong Kong on June 13. More details....

WuXi NextCODE in Hunt for $200 Million in Venture Capital

According to a Reuters report, WuXi NextCODE is talking to investors about another fundraising, this one for $200 million. The company, which is part of WuXi AppTec's genomics operation, completed a $75 million Series B round earlier this month. The funding is drawing interest from top-tier investors such as Hillhouse Capital and Sequoia Capital, said Reuters, which attributed the information to two people with direct knowledge of the activity. WuXi hopes to close the latest round in July, Reuters said. More details....
