Boehringer Ingelheim Opens $77 Million Shanghai Biologics CMO Plant; Establishes R&D Partnership with Peking University

Germany's Boehringer Ingelheim officially opened its $77 million China biologic drug contract manufacturing facility for biologic drugs in Shanghai. The project, which is a joint venture with Shanghai Zhangjiang Biotech and Pharma Base Development, will join BI's three existing biologic CMO facilities, located in Europe and the US. BI also announced a long-term, early science collaboration with Peking University. The collaboration aims to discover new drug candidates for cardiometabolic disease and cancer immunology, using regenerative medicine and gene therapy. More details....

WuXi NextCODE Raises $75 Million for Genomics Operations

WuXi NextCODE, the contract genomics arm of the WuXi AppTec Group, closed a $75 million Series B financing from the company's existing investors and partners. WuXi AppTec acquired NextCODE, which used the largely homogenous genomic profile of Iceland as a base, in early 2015 for $65 million. WuXi said the B round financing will underwrite consumer products in China. WuXi NextCODE has operations in Shanghai, Cambridge, Mass. and Reykjavik, Iceland. More details....

Beijing's Novogene Orders 25 of Illumina's Latest Sequencing Machines

Novogene, a genomics sequencing company, ordered 25 Illumina NovaSeq 6000 sequencers, Illumina's newest offering introduced in January. The machines cost $25 million total. Novogene will install five machines in the US, while it will operate the remaining 20 NovaSeqs, which were bought by the Nanjing Yangzi State Owned Investment Group, in China. Including its existing 30 Illumina HiSeq X and 10 PacBio Sequel systems, Novogene will now have annual throughput of 280,000 human whole genomes, the highest in the world, says the company. Headquartered in Beijing, Novogene has subsidiaries in Hong Kong, the US and the UK. More details....

WuXi AppTec Plans China IPO

Wuxi AppTec, China's largest CRO/CMO, has begun the application process for an IPO on a China exchange. Previously, the company was rumored to favor a reverse-merger transaction, which is generally considered a short-cut alternative to the long wait of an official China IPO. But WuXi has announced it will seek an A-Share listing in RMB, and that it has enlisted Huatai United Securities to shepherd the company through the process. In January, WuXi filed to list WuXi Biologics on the Hong Kong exchange at a $1.5 billion valuation, and its small molecule manufacturing subsidiary, SynTheAll, has been listed on China's OTC Third Board since 2014. WuXi AppTec's STA Pharma to Expand Changzhou Site

SynTheAll (STA) Pharma, WuXi AppTec's small-molecule process development and manufacturing subsidiary, announced plans to expand its one-year-old Changzhou campus. In the short term, STA will raise its headcount to 300 scientists from 200 and increase reactor volume from 290 cubic meters to 490 cubic meters. Eventually, STA expects the site will be home to 500 scientists and offer 1,500 cubic meters of reactor volume. In 2014, WuXi sold 11% of STA to management and outside investors, listing the company on China's OTC exchange, NEEQ. The funding valued STA at $1.3 billion. More details....
