Suzhou Zelgen Biosciences completed a $62 million series B financing to support its portfolio of small molecule and biologic drug candidates. Established in 2009, Zelgen is focused on cancer, hematology and auto-immune products. With the new capital, the company will advance its portfolio and prepare for commercialization of its lead product, a Phase III candidate that targets various forms of late-stage solid tumor cancers. China's Life Science VC Explosion Continues; Rises 50% Higher in 2017

The China venture capital explosion, already seen in 2016, continues at record levels in 2017, driving development in China's life sciences. According to data compiled by ChinaBio® Group, China life science venture/private equity funds have raised $45 billion and invested $12 billion over the past 30 months. They closed $20 billion in new funds during 2016 and are on track to hit $30 billion this year. At this rate, they could raise a total of $60 billion over three years, a promise of continuing support for China life science companies. "It's the best time ever to be a life science entrepreneur in China," summarized Greg Scott, Founder and CEO of ChinaBio. More details....

China's Top 10 Pharmaceutical Companies

China's pharmaceutical market currently generates $110 billion of revenues, according to BizVibe, a Canadian B2B global business networking platform. BizVibe, citing unspecified experts, says the figure will hit $167 billion by 2020. The website also offered a top 10 list of China pharma companies, based on a combination of each company's revenues and market capitalization. The top four companies: Shanghai Pharmaceuticals, China National Pharmaceutical Group, Hengrui Medicine and Fosun Pharma. More details....

Ninth ChinaBio® Partnering Forum Celebrates China Life Science "Sea Change"

In late May, ChinaBio® Group and EBD Group convened the ninth iteration of the ChinaBio® Partnering Forum. This year's event took place against a very positive industry backdrop of rapidly accelerating change -- 34 new funds focused on China life-science funds raised over $15 billion last year and $5.4 billion was invested, three times the previous year's $1.8 billion. In addition, China has taken numerous steps to bring its drug development regulations in line with global practices, a "sea change" that will speed up approvals of novel drugs. The ninth CBPF, which took place in Zhuhai, China, hosted 858 attendees representing 460 companies from 30 countries. It featured over 50 company presentations, and the attendees scheduled a record-breaking 1,682 meetings from over 6,800 requests. More details....

The Sanming Model: The Path for China's Healthcare Reform?

The future for China healthcare may have been discovered in Sanming, a smaller city located in Fujian Province on China's southeast coast. In 2011, the metropolitan area, whose healthcare system suffered from much the same difficulties as other China cities, was also facing a specific problem: one of its insurance funds was running a large deficit. Instead of addressing that issue as a standalone difficulty, Sanming decided it would attempt a comprehensive reform. It would consider matters such as drug pricing, unequal coverage of individual insurance plans, hospital revenue structure and salaries for health workers. It found that these seemingly separate, fairly difficult problems were in fact interrelated. By aiming for a comprehensive solution, it moved towards a healthcare delivery system that solved its immediate problem and some long-term structural difficulties.
