Denovo Starts US-China Phase III Study of Lymphoma Treatment

Denovo Biopharma, a San Diego-Hangzhou company,  has started a pivotal Phase III trial of its lead drug, DB102 (enzastaurin). DB102, which was initially developed by Eli Lilly, failed a Phase III clinical trial in 2013 in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Denovo acquired global rights to DB102 in 2014, planning to redevelop the drug by targeting a sub-set of patients. By analyzing Lilly’s patient samples, Denovo found overall survival was significantly improved for patients who possess the DGM1 biomarker. The study will enroll 235 patients in the US and China. Fosun Pharma Stays Committed to Expanding through R&D and M&A

Shanghai Fosun Pharma plans to become the “Huawei of the pharmaceutical industry,” according to Qiyu Chen, Chairman of the company. Chen made the comparison because, like the China smartphone company, Fosun will continue to invest in R&D and pursue M&A while it plans further expansion into global markets. Last year, Fosun spent $239 million on R&D, part of the nearly $740 million it has spent over the last five years. And it completed a $1.1 billion acquisition of a majority stake in India's Gland Pharma, which it says will help Fosun market biosimilar drugs globally. More details....

Chi-Med's Innovative Drug Portfolio: Eight Candidates in 31 Trials

While announcing 2017 first-half financial results, Hutchison China MediTech (Chi-Med) provided a broad overview of its wide-ranging innovative drug portfolio. Comprised of eight drug small-molecule candidates, the portfolio is currently involved in 31 clinical trials. There are many signs of progress: earlier this year, Chi-Med filed its first NDA, a request for China approval of fruquintinib, a VEGFR inhibitor, as a treatment for colorectal cancer. Chi-Med also started its first global Phase III registration trial (for savolitinib), and it has five other pivotal Phase III studies underway with three more close to starting. More details....

Exclusive Interview: Dr. Sofie Qiao, CEO of Vivace Therapeutics

In June, Vivace Therapeutics burst its stealth bubble by announcing it had raised $40 million in venture capital. In fact, the San Mateo, California company had already been in existence for two years, but deliberately kept its public profile low -- invisible, actually. The reason? Its novel science. As Sofie Qiao, PhD, President and CEO of Vivace, told ChinaBio® Today in an exclusive interview, "We stayed covert; it was really early stage and novel; we wanted to see how it turned out." Using Partnerships, Hua Medicine Brings Novel Diabetes Drug to Phase III

Six years ago, Hua Medicine (Shanghai) in-licensed global rights to a novel GKA treatment for type 2 diabetes from Roche. Late last year, Hua announced positive results from the candidate's China proof-of-concept Phase II trial. The company also raised $50 million in additional capital during 2016 and has started US clinical development of the GKA candidate. Li Chen, PhD, co-founded Hua with Ge Li, PhD, founder of WuXi AppTec.
