China's United Family Healthcare Acquired by New Frontier for $1.44 Billion

United Family Healthcare, a chain of nine private China hospitals, agreed to be acquired by New Frontier Corp., a public investment vehicle, at an expected value of $1.44 billion. UFH is currently owned by TPG and Fosun Pharma. It is one of the largest integrated private healthcare service providers in China by revenue. Its nine hospitals (including two under construction) and 14 clinics are located in first and select second tier cities. UFH plans to continue to grow through organic expansion and strategic acquisitions. More details....

Wall Street Journal: Dr. Jiankui He, the Man Who Edited China Embryos, Was a Product of the System

In a deeply researched Wall Street Journal article, Preetika Rana provides extraordinary depth into the story of Dr. Jiankui He, the man who announced last November he had used Crispr-Cas9 gene editing to alter human embryos in eight women. Dr. He was widely condemned at the time for the first-in-human experiment, and is probably now imprisoned by China authorities. But Ms. Rana told ChinaBio® Today, "Dr. He was a product of a system that encourages breaking scientific and social barriers, with rewards coming first." She continued, "As one of my sources says in the story: 'Of course, he made his own choices. But he was a product of his environment,' Arizona University’s Dr. Hurlbut said of Dr. He. 'The narrative of a rogue scientist excuses the rest of science from having played a role. That’s just not true.'" Cytovant of China Enters $1 Billion Deal for Four Medigene Immunotherapies

Cytovant Sciences, a China cell therapy startup, announced a $1 billion partnership with Germany's Medigene to develop four of Medigene's T cell immunotherapy products in China. Cytovant paid $10 million upfront for the products, and agreed to make up to $1 billion plus in milestone payments. Cytovant, headquartered in Hong Kong, is one of the "vant" companies formed by US-based Roivant around a specific purpose. Last year, Roivant formed Sinovant to develop 11 drug candidates in China. C-Bridge Capital and Tasly Invest $150 Million in Two China Biopharmas

C-Bridge Capital and Tasly Holding, a TCM company, have teamed up to invest $150 million in two young China biopharmas, which will be merged into a single entity as part of the investment. The two existing companies are Shanghai's Tianjing Biopharma and Tianjin's Tianzhenshi Biotechnology. The merged companies, whose new name was not disclosed, will jointly hold twelve antibody drug candidates. With $700 million under management, C-Bridge led a $100 million investment in HCV company Ascletis two months ago. More details....

Tianjin's CanSino to Raise $160.5 Million for Novel Vaccines in Hong Kong IPO
Mar 20, 2019

Tianjin CanSino Biologics, a vaccine company, expects to raise up to $160.5 million in a Hong Kong IPO, which will begin trading on March 28. The company is developing 15 vaccine candidates for 12 disease areas. Its Ebola vaccine has been approved for use, and the company's meningitis and a meningococcal vaccines are near-NDA stage. Both candidates have demonstrated superior safety profiles and immunogenicity in their Phase III trials. CanSino is the seventh China biopharma, and the first vaccine company, to IPO in Hong Kong under its pre-revenue rules. More details....
