Shanghai IASO Biotherapeutics issued an exclusive worldwide license for a fully-human CD19 binder to Philadelphia’s Cabaletta Bio in a deal worth up to $162 million. Cabaletta will use the binder in CABA-201, a CD19-targeting CAR T that aims to be one of the first curative targeted cell therapies for autoimmune diseases. IASO Bio will receive up to $162 million in upfront and milestone payments for two possible candidates, plus royalties. IASO Bio has first negotiation rights to develop and commercialize Cabaletta's products in Greater China.

Shanghai JW Therapeutics reported that its CAR-T immunotherapy, relmacabtagene, was approved in China as a second-line treatment for follicular lymphoma. The NMPA approved the anti-CD19 cell immunotherapy to treat adult patients with follicular lymphoma that is refractory or that relapses within 24 months of second-line or above systemic treatment. One year ago, the candidate was approved in China as a third-line therapy for large B-cell lymphoma. JW is a joint venture formed by Seattle's Juno Therapeutics, a cell therapy biotech, and WuXi AppTec, a China CRO/CMO. More details....

Biosyngen said and IND for its autologous T cell therapy for relapsed/metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer was accepted for review in China. BRG01 works by genetically modifying a patient's own T cells to express the additional receptor for Epstein-Barr virus antigen recognition and T cell activation when it engages EBV+ tumor cells. Biosyngen, with dual R&D centers and GMP facilities in Singapore and China, develops first-in-class and best-in-class innovative immunotherapies for global markets. NeuShen Therapeutics, a Shanghai-Boston CNS startup, closed a $20 million Pre-A financing to advance its AAV-based gene therapy and small molecule discovery platforms. The company was founded by Joan Shen, MD, PhD, who previously was CEO at Shanghai’s I-Mab. NeuShen is currently in discussions with the Horae Gene Therapy Center, UMass Chan Medical School to develop several of the Center’s CNS gene therapy projects. The company said it would use the capital to add team members and advance in-house CNS drug discovery in the US and China. The financing was led by Lapam, a China VC. More details....

SynerK, a Boston area startup, will partner with Hangzhou’s Sciwind to develop small interfering RNA candidates for liver and metabolic diseases that remain unmet medical needs. The companies will work together to identify new therapeutic targets that play critical roles in disease biology. SynerK has R&D centers in Boston, Suzhou and Beijing. The company, whose founders are RNA industry experts, plans to apply siRNA to treat diseases that have previously been difficult to treat through traditional approaches. SynerK was earlier housed at Massachusetts’ Creagen Life Science Incubato, but is now on its own. More details....
