Frontage Labs and Jiuzhou Pharma Form JV for CDMO of APIs

Frontage Labs, a US-Shanghai CRO, established a JV with Zhejiang Jiuzhou Pharma to provide API and intermediate development/manufacturing (CDMO) services. The JV, named FJ Pharma, will combine Jiuzhou’s expertise in API manufacturing with Frontage's formulation services. Jiuzhou said the service will be especially valuable for its US clients. Frontage's incubator affiliate, Frontida Biopharm, will offer finished manufacturing of drugs to the JV's clients. More details....

WuXi Biologics and Sartorius Open Joint Shanghai Lab for Biologic Drugs

WuXi Biologics and Sartorius Stedim Biotech, a French company that makes biologic drug manufacturing equipment, have opened a Joint Lab in Shanghai. The lab includes microscale bioreactor systems used for early stage R&D and process optimization of biologic drug candidates, providing accelerated development, optimization and rapid scale-up of cell culture processes. SSB specializes in single-use reactors, and the company has a longstanding relationship with WuXi Biologics, a division of WuXi AppTec. More details....

Fosun Pharma in $1-$1.5 Billion Bidding War for India's Gland Pharma

Shanghai Fosun Pharma has submitted a non-binding bid to acquire India's Gland Pharma, a contract manufacturer of injectible drugs. Gland, which put itself up for sale, is valued somewhere in the $1-$1.5 billion range, and several pharmas/investment firms are interested. Three years ago, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts invested $191 million for a minority stake in Gland at a $600-$650 million valuation. A prolific deal-maker, Fosun has not previously shown interest in Indian pharmas. More details....

WuXi AppTec Buys Germany's Crelux, a Protein Drug CRO

WuXi AppTec, China's largest CRO/CMO, acquired Crelux of Munich, Germany, a structure-based protein drug discovery company. Crelux's service offerings include hit-finding, conformational analysis and lead optimization, as well as protein production, biophysical assays, fragment screening, and X-ray crystallography. WuXi positioned the acquisition as an important addition to its European presence that will facilitate greater interaction with European customers. Crelux was privately held and terms of the transaction were not disclosed. More details....

WuXi AppTec Forms China Cancer Immunotherapy JV with Juno Therapeutics

WuXi AppTec, China's largest CRO/CMO, and Juno Therapeutics of Seattle have formed a 50-50 joint venture to bring Juno's promising immuno-oncology drugs to China. The new company, JW Biotechnology, will be based in Shanghai and will eventually own China rights to Juno's products, once certain unspecified conditions are met. Juno will be paid an upfront payment in equity (presumably JV equity), plus milestone payments and royalties on sales. WuXi will use its CRO capabilities to pursue China approval of the products. Through its venture arm, WuXi has already invested in Juno. More details....
