Dr. Zhengqing Li recently joined Ascletis, a Hangzhou company focused on therapeutic areas including anti-viral, cancer and fatty liver diseases, as Chief Medical Officer and President of R&D Greater China. Prior to Ascletis, Dr. Li worked at MSD China from 2011 to last month, where he served as Global Vice President and General Manager of the MSD R&D Center China. During his tenure, he built MSD China into a fully integrated development organization with more than 600 employees that led more than 20 product or new indication approvals in China. Over the past month, WuXi Biologics has announced three new manufacturing plants, two of them outside of China -- the first time it has located manufacturing plants in a foreign country. The new facilities represent substantial investments: $390 million for the Ireland plant, $240 million for Shijiazhuang (northern China) and $60 million in Singapore. WuXi completed its first biologics plant in 2012 in Wuxi City, which remained its only manufacturing facility until last year. By 2022, when all its announced facilities are expected to be GMP certified, WuXi will have ten plants operating with a total capacity of 222,700 liters annually, up from zero production capacity in 2011. WuXi AppTec Co., Ltd. announced its initial public offering in Shanghai stock exchange for 104,198,600 shares of common stock at a price of $3.40 per share. WuXi’s stock price raised 43.98% to $4.89 almost immediately after the stock market opens. The fund collected through this IPO will be used to build drug safety assessment center in Suzhou, expand R&D facilities in Tianjin and WuXi’s headquarter, developing diagnostic projects as well as increasing cash. WuXi will use this IPO fund to further strengthen its capabilities and capacities to decrease drug innovation expenses and improve R&D efficiency. More details....

Synyi, an artificial intelligence start-up located in Shanghai Zhangjiang, received $15.7 million Series B led by GGV Capital. Sequoia Capital China and Zhen Fund also participated in the round. Synyi will use the fund to develop medical natural language processing, medical data governance and machine learning. While establishing its team and expanding business, Synyi will also explore deeper in the industry standards. More details....

WuXi Biologics is to invest $392 million to build a new biologics drug substance manufacturing facility in Ireland. The new facility will use single-use bioreactors for commercial biomanufacturing. This is also WuXi Biologics’ first manufacturing site outside of China. A total of 48,000 L fed-batch and 6,000 L perfusion bioreactor capacity will be installed. This facility will create approximately 700 jobs during its construction and over 400 highly skilled jobs after establishment over 5 years. More details....
