CAS Announces Stem Cell Initiative Feb 11, 2011: The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) wants to make a name for China science by moving into the front rank of stem cell research. To accomplish this, the CAS has set up a formal research platform and base for stem cell and regenerative medicine research with Qi Zhou, PhD, Institute of Zoology, CAS, as chief scientist. The platform named four core research centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Kunming as the base of the platform, and it will complete the platform by adding the resources of 17 additional research institutions around the country. Cellonis Uses Stem Cells to Treat Diabetes Jun 24, 2010: Cellonis Biotechnologies Group, located in Beijing, reported that its autologous stem cells therapy has successfully treated patients with diabetes. The therapy uses stem cells harvested from a patient’s bone marrow. Cellonis claims that, in the best case, the treatment restores a patient’s natural ability to produce insulin and has also reversed complications from diabetes, such as kidney failure. Beike Forms JV to Deliver Stem Cell Therapies throughout Asia Jun 11, 2010: Shenzhen Beike Biotechnology has formed a JV with SiriCell Technologies of Bangkok, a fellow stem cell company. Beike Holdings Limited, as the JV is called, will focus on building international subsidiaries of Beike and developing partnerships with hospitals throughout Southeast Asia. Beike Reports Successful Test of Stem Cell Treatment for Lupus Jun 8, 2010: In a new study, an umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells transplant (UC-MSCT) seemed to improve patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who had not responded to standard treatments. Among the16 patients who received stem cell transplants, there were no treatment-related mortality or other adverse events. Ten patients completed at least 6 months of follow-up and 2 patients were followed for more than 2 years. More details...

China Cord Blood Pays $20 Million for Stake in Shandong Cord Blood Bank Feb 25, 2010: China Cord Blood Corporation has acquired a 19.92% equity interest in Shandong Cord Blood Bank (SCBB) for $20.5 million, which will be paid in cash. China Cord Blood already projects an investment yield in this year of 5% or about $1 million from the purchase. More importantly, China Cord Blood also has right of first refusal on future equity interests in SCBB. More details...

NeoStem’s Eyre Subsidiary Approved to Use New Manufacturing Facility Feb 1, 2010: NeoStem reported its China subsidiary, Suzhou Erye Pharma, was approved by the SFDA to begin manufacturing two penicillin products at the company’s new facility. The new plant will allow Eyre to increase production of solvent crystallization sterile penicillin by 50% and freeze-dried raw sterile penicillin by 100%. Beike Biotech Given $1.8 Million Grant for Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Trial Jan 11, 2010: Shenzhen Beike Biotechnology Co. has received a $1.8 million grant to conduct a clinical trial of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSC) as a treatment for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other degenerative diseases. The grant was awarded by Jiangsu’s Department of Science and Technology. Beike Biotech’s partners in the project are Jiangsu University and Nanjing University’s Drug Tower Hospital. More details...

China Cord Blood Completes Secondary Offering on NYSE Nov 19, 2009: China Cord Blood Corporation listed its ordinary shares on the New York Stock Exchange and, at the same time, completed a secondary offering. The company placed 3.3 million shares at a price of $6.05 for gross proceeds of $20 million. China allows one cord blood collection license for each major area, and China Cord Blood owns the licenses for Beijing and Guangdong. More details...

NeoStem Closes China Biopharma Acquisition Nov 2, 2009: NeoStem, Inc. announced it has closed its acquisition of China Biopharmaceuticals Holdings, Inc. China Biopharma’s sole asset is a 51% stake in Suzhou Erye Pharmaceutical Co., a 50-year old pharmaceutical company that expects to generate $60 million in revenue and net income of $12 million in 2009. The deal has been in the works for most of the past year. NeoStem is a stem cell storage company based in the US, while Suzhou Erye Pharma boasts a portfolio of 100 products on seven cGMP lines that it markets in China. More details...

BioTime Investigating Stem Cells to Treat Cancer Oct 22, 2009: BioTime, Inc. announced that Dr. David Jin, Chief Medical Officer of BioTime’s newly formed subsidiary, OncoCyte Corporation, will present the keynote address at the Fifth Chinese Congress on Stem Cell Therapy in Beijing.
