Frontage Labs Completes US Phase I Trial for China TCM Company Feb 1, 2012: Frontage Laboratories announced its US facility has finished a Phase I dose-escalation trial of a botanical drug for a China client. The test will be used to support a request for FDA approval of the drug. One year ago, Frontage announced a $50 million strategic collaboration with Yabao Pharma of Beijing. The two companies planned to develop sustained release delivery for more than 20 drug products for use in the US and Europe. This drug being tested may be part of that deal. More details....

Frontage Labs Opens Clinical-Stage CRO in Jilin Hospital Dec 23, 2011: Frontage Laboratories officially opened a renovated clinical-stage facility in Jilin University Hospital, which it has been operating since earlier this year. Frontage is a US-China CRO with a pre-clinical toxicology facility in Shanghai and a drug development operation in Beijing. The Jilin hospital facility will offer early phase oncology research studies. More details....

Quintiles, a Clinical-Stage CRO, will Double China Headcount Dec 13, 2011: Quintiles, a global clinical-stage CRO based in North Carolina, will launch a new company, named Kun Tuo, to build its China presence. The new company, like its predecessor, Quintiles China, will offer clinical trial services. Although Quintiles employs 20,000 people worldwide, it currently has just 300 staff in its two China offices. Kun Tuo plans to double Quintiles’ China's staffing over the next year. More details....

WuXi PharmaTech Makes Clinical-Stage CRO Acquisition Oct 24, 2011: WuXi PharmaTech will acquire two related China clinical-stage CROs so that the company can expand its offerings to include clinical-stage services for its clients. Previously, WuXi’s offerings were limited to pre-clinical drug development and contract manufacturing. In August, Dr. Ge Li, CEO of WuXi, announced the company would move into clinical-stage services through a “combination of organic growth and acquisitions." Positioning the expansion as a natural outgrowth of its pre-clinical work, Dr. Li said clients were requesting help in obtaining SFDA approval for their new products. More details....

ShangPharma Buys Charles River’s Shanghai Lab Oct 24, 2011: ShangPharma acquired the Shanghai research facility formerly owned by Charles River Labs. The purchase will allow ShangPharma’s main subsidiary, Shanghai ChemPartner, to expand its GLP tox study capacity. The lab comprises 31,990 square feet of in-vivo research facilities, which were designed for GLP tox studies, plus another 13,885 square feet of lab and office space. More details....

CRO ClinTec Making Push into China and Asia Pacific Region Jun 17, 2011: ClinTec International, a privately held clinical stage CRO based in Glasgow, Scotland, has opened four fully registered offices in China, Singapore and Thailand. Over the next three months, the company, which is bulking up its presence in Asia Pacific, will open additional offices in South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia. ClinTec stresses its coverage of emerging markets, declaring it has operations in a UN-like 80 countries. ClinTec claims special expertise in oncology trials. More details....

LabCorp Buys Clearstone Labs, Giving it Access to China Jun 16, 2011: LabCorp (Laboratory Corporation of America) will acquire Clearstone Central Laboratories, a privately held central laboratory services company that will extend LabCorp’s reach into China and the greater Asia-Pacific region. Clearstone has a facility in Beijing and another in Singapore in addition to labs in Canada and Europe. Clearstone is headquartered in Toronto. LabCorp, which reported revenues of $5 billion in 2010, offers a broad list of tests that range from routine blood analyses to reproductive genetics to DNA sequencing. More details...

Shenogen Signs Up ShangPharma to Help Develop Cancer Drug Mar 16, 2011: Shenogen Pharma, a company developing mAbs that target the ER-alpha 36 receptor to treat cancer, has signed a contract with ShangPharma Corporation for development work. The emphasis on mAbs represents a departure for Shenogen, which previously sought to blend Western pharma with its knowledge of TCM. The company’s lead molecule, SNG-162, is a TCM that targets an Estrogen Receptor (ER) variant discovered by one of Shenogen’s founders. Shenogen Pharma’s science was so impressive it won a “Most Promising Company” award at the Shanghai ChinaBio® Investor Forum held in 2008. More details....

Pharmaron Signs CMO Contract with Isis Pharma Mar 16, 2011: Pharmaron, a Beijing-based CRO/CMO, will provide Isis Pharmaceuticals with up to 100 kg. of nucleoside phosphoramidites. Isis is developing antisense drugs – it has a pipeline of 24 molecules in development – and nucleoside phosphoramidites are the fundamental building blocks used to produce antisense therapeutics. The agreement is a two-year contract. Pharmaron has been providing materials for Isis during its early discovery work. More details....

Bristol-Myers Squibb to Partner with WuXi PharmaTech Mar 7, 2011: Bristol-Myers Squibb announced a strategic partnership with WuXi PharmaTech that will conduct stability studies of new small-molecule drugs from around the world. WuXi will build and operate a dedicated facility in Shanghai for the operation. The facility will be a fully cGMP-compliant 25,000-square-foot analytical testing facility that stores and tests stability samples along with other services for BMS. Financial details of the major new partnership were not disclosed. More details....
