Medpace Announces Accreditation for Central Labs in Beijing and Mumbai May 10, 2010: Medpace Reference Laboratories LLC, a CRO offering central lab services based in Cincinnati, Ohio, reported that its new laboratories in Beijing and Mumbai have been accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), NGSP Level 1 and CDC Lipid Standardization (LSP) Part III. Medpace provides Phase I-IV core development services for drug, biologic and device programs. More details...

PPD Opens Vaccine Research Center in Taizhou Apr 27, 2010: PPD, Inc. has opened a vaccine clinical research center in China Medical City located in Taizhou. PPD will use to center to provide clinical monitoring services for multinational and local companies that are seeking approval for new vaccines in China. The new facility adds to PPD’s presence in China. In November of last year, PPD bought two China-based CROs, Excel PharmaStudies and BioDuro LLC, which began the major consolidation of CROs in China. Charles River Labs Pays $1.6 Billion for WuXi PharmaTech Apr 26, 2010: In a blockbuster announcement, Charles River Laboratories said it will pay $1.6 billion to acquire WuXi PharmaTech (药明康德), the most visible of China’s indigenous pre-clinical CRO companies. The transaction will extend WuXi’s services to include first-in-human testing. WuXi shareholders will receive $21.25 per ADS in a combination of $10 in cash and the remainder in Charles River stock, a 38% premium to Friday’s closing price. More details...

PhytoMedical and Medicilon Seek China Partner for Cancer Drug Apr 15, 2010: PhytoMedical Technologies, Inc. of Princeton, NJ, has signed a letter of intent with Shanghai Medicilon, a preclinical CRO. Under the terms of the proposed agreement, Medicilon will seek to find a China partner for PhytoMedical’s pre-clinical cancer compound. The price for the China rights to the drug will be payment for the compound’s pre-clinical development, which will be conducted by Medicilon. PhytoMedical and the partner will each be responsible for submitting the IND package to their respective agencies. More details...

Charles River Shanghai Is GLP Certified by OECD Member Country Apr 15, 2010: Charles River Shanghai, a joint venture between Charles River Labs and Shanghai BioExplorer, has been GLP certified by an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member country, the first preclinical CRO in China to achieve the milestone. The award certifies that the facility is compliant with OECD principles of GLP for both toxicology and laboratory services. More details...

Tigermed Grows International Business through Partnership with ICON Apr 7, 2010: Tigermed Consulting has formed a China alliance with ICON, an international CRO that, like Tigermed, specializes in clinical services. According to the two companies, the alliance between Tigermed and ICON will offer their clients better access to Chinese patients, combining Tigermed’s knowledge of China drug development with ICON’s international experience. Chongqing Porton Secures $10 Million for Production Facility Mar 12, 2010: Chongqing Porton Fine Chemicals Co., a CMO, raised $10 million from the Chongqing DT Fund. The Chongqing DT Fund is a joint effort run by DT Capital of Shanghai and funded by the Chongqing Venture Capital Guidance Fund. Porton will use the money to build a state-of-the-art intermediate and API manufacturing facility in Changshou Chemical Park in Chongqing. More details...

Quintiles' Beijing Lab to Offer Anatomic Pathology Services Feb 17, 2010: Quintiles, the privately held CRO headquartered in North Carolina, said its Beijing central lab has begun offering anatomic pathology services to help biopharmas develop more effective cancer treatments. The same services are offered within China to match patients with the best cancer treatments for their genetic makeup. More details...

Pharmaron Acquires Bridge Labs China Jan 12, 2010: Pharmaron Holdings Limited has completed its acquisition of Bridge Laboratories China. Both Pharmaron, which is headquartered in California, and Bridge have laboratory facilities in Beijing. Pharmaron said the acquisition would “extend” the range of services it offers. Bridge provided the first western standard GLP-compliant preclinical toxicology services in China. In August 2008, data from Bridge’s animal studies was accepted by the FDA as part of an IND filing. Terms of the Pharmaron-Bridge transaction were not disclosed. More details...
