China Scientists Given US Award for Cancer Breakthrough

Two China scientists have been awarded a prestigious US prize for their groundbreaking work with a form of leukemia. By combining traditional Chinese medicine and western approaches, they increased the five-year survival rate of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) from 25% to an astonishing 95%. In recognition of their contribution, Drs. Zhen-Yi Wang and Zhu Chen were named recipients of the 7th Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research by the National Foundation for Cancer Research in the US. More details....

Novo Nordisk A/S , the Danish pharma that specializes in diabetes drugs, does not want to grow in China through M&A. It plans to continue its emphasis on developing its own innovative drugs. Sinovac Lands Flu Vaccine Order from Beijing CDC

Sinovac Biotech was selected by the Beijing CDC as one of the four manufacturers to supply two million doses of seasonal influenza vaccine. The actual amount shipped will depend upon demand. Sinovac needs some good news. Its sales declined from a high-water mark of $84 million in 2009, the year of the swine flu outbreak, to just $33 million in 2010. Profits fell from $20 million two years ago to a loss of $8.5 million last year. Fortunately, Sinovac has $92.7 million in cash to fall back on. More details....

SciClone Announces $20 Million Stock Buyback

SciClone Pharma announced a share repurchase program of up to $20 million over the next 24 months. SciClone, headquartered in California, commercializes and markets Western drugs in China. In addition to boosting the company’s stock price, the repurchase program will partially offset the 8.3 million shares that may be offered by the previous owners of NovaMed, which SciClone acquired in April of this year. GSK Seeking Up to $2B Bolt-on Acquisitions in India

GlaxoSmithKline is looking to complete “smaller” acquisition targets in India in the $500 million to $2 billion range, according to the company’s CEO Andrew Witty. He characterized these transactions as bolt-on additions rather than transformative ones. GSK does not need a large acquisition, he said, because the company already has a well-established presence in India with a recognizable brand name. His comments would seem to apply equally to China, where GSK has been involved in several "smaller" M&A transactions. More details....
