ChinaBio® Leadership Retreat Brings 120 Senior Life Science Executives Together to “Rethink China”

publication date: Oct 22, 2012

author/source: Richard Daverman, PhD
The second annual ChinaBio® Leadership Retreat concluded its successful invitation-only summit, focusing on the agenda “Rethinking China: A New Strategic Approach.” The meeting was attended by more than 120 senior executives from global life science companies, China’s leading biotechs and venture capital firms. The two-day event was held October 22-23 at the Sheraton Four Points hotel in the Taicang New Development Zone, just outside of Shanghai.

“ChinaBio’s second Leadership Retreat brought together an amazing group of industry leaders with deep experience and important insights who can truly affect change in China,” said Greg Scott, Founder and CEO of ChinaBio®. “This year’s discussions focused on how the industry is rapidly changing globally as well as in China, and how both multinational and domestic companies need to change their strategies to be successful in China.”

To set the stage for later discussions, John Cai, PhD, Director of the Center for Health Care Management and Policy and Adjunct Professor of Economics at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), delivered the keynote address. During his twenty-year career, Dr. Cai has focused on the intersection of health care economics and health care policy in both the U.S. and China. He participated in the design and implementation of the first comprehensive health care reform plan in the U.S. (Massachusetts) and was actively involved in the design of China’s National Health Care Reform Program, which committed $125 billion in 2009 to improve the quality and delivery of health care.

Other speakers featured in the morning sessions included Dr. Karen Bernstein, Co-founder and Chairman of BioCentury Publications, and Dr. Jason Mann, Head, China Healthcare Equity Research at Barclays Capital.

The afternoon consisted of interactive working sessions designed to develop actionable “lessons learned” that delegates could use to build their business strategies for China in 2013 and beyond.

“It was great to see some very creative ideas being shared frankly with the group, and I’m happy ChinaBio could be part of that,” Scott added.

The second day was dedicated to networking at the East Sea Golf & Country Club in Taicang. Delegates were offered the chance to play a round of golf on this 18-hole championship course designed by Colin Montgomerie. After golf, delegates attended a closing reception at the country club, where they met for a final time to discuss the results of the Retreat’s activities and plan the next steps for collaboration.
